Why Wasp and Hornet Pressure Is a Particular Issue in North Vancouver
North Vancouver's steep forested mountain terrain creates the highest yellowjacket ground nest density in Metro Vancouver. Grouse Mountain's conservation area slopes, the Capilano Canyon's steep riparian banks, and the canyon walls along Lynn Creek and Seymour River provide massive undisturbed ground nest habitat. Properties at the forested mountain edge — Canyon Heights, Grouse Woods, Lynn Valley, Blueridge — see ground nest pressure from these adjacent conservation areas at levels that flat Metro Vancouver cities do not experience.
Bald-faced hornet aerial nests in the mature conifer and deciduous trees throughout North Vancouver's residential neighbourhoods are consistent summer calls. The forested canopy across almost all of North Vancouver's residential areas means aerial nest encounters are more common here than in any other Metro Vancouver city.
Older Lonsdale and Canyon Heights homes with original 1960s to 1970s eave and soffit construction provide void-nesting yellowjacket sites consistent with other Metro Vancouver older residential.
