Situation
In the vibrant Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, an older home was grappling with persistent rodent issues. Despite recent aesthetic upgrades like deck replacements, these renovations inadvertently compromised existing pest-proofing measures. The homeowner sought our expertise to tackle these challenges, with a focus on removing rodents, sealing entry points, and upgrading crawlspace insulation.
What we found
Our detailed inspection uncovered several structural vulnerabilities contributing to the rodent problem. We identified multiple entry points around the siding, notably under the front steps and deck. The back deck had disrupted the siding line, creating additional pathways for pests. Furthermore, the crawlspace was in poor condition, with about 1,000 square feet of soiled insulation and poly needing removal. These issues not only facilitated rodent entry but also affected the home's energy efficiency and comfort.
What we did
We implemented a comprehensive plan to address these challenges:
- Removed the entire back deck to properly seal the siding line.
- Sealed all potential entry points around the siding and under the front steps and deck.
- Ensured all rodents were removed and thoroughly cleaned the crawlspace.
- Installed a proper vapor barrier, meticulously taped and sealed to prevent moisture issues.
- Replaced the old, soiled insulation with new high-efficiency material, significantly enhancing the home's thermal performance.
- Implemented a three-month population control program to protect the new insulation from future damage.
Outcome
The strategic pest-proofing and insulation upgrades led to a significant reduction in rodent activity. The homeowner reported no new signs of rodents, especially in previously problematic areas. The improved insulation not only made the living environment more comfortable but also increased energy efficiency, resulting in noticeable improvements in temperature regulation throughout the home. Our approach resolved the immediate pest issues and fortified the home against future infestations, providing long-term peace of mind for the homeowner.
