Why Raccoon Control Is a Particular Issue in New Westminster
Brunette Creek Regional Park and the Fraser River waterfront are New Westminster's primary raccoon habitat sources. Brunette Creek provides forested riparian habitat connecting Burnaby to New Westminster. The Fraser River's waterfront parks and cliff-top vegetation sustain raccoon populations year-round along the south side of the city. These populations forage year-round into Queens Park, Sapperton, and other hillside residential areas.
Queens Park's Victorian and Edwardian homes from the 1880s to 1920s have the oldest soffit and fascia construction in Metro Vancouver. Original wood fascia boards from the early 1900s that have been softening for a century provide the easiest raccoon access anywhere in the region. Spring denning access to Queens Park heritage attics is a consistent annual pattern on certain blocks.
